An afternoon in Chelsea

Took a stroll to check out Walton Ford’s exhibit at Paul Kasmin Gallery and ended up viewing 3 other artists in the area. Yoko Ono, Paul Winstanley and Bruce Porter.

Yoko Ono’s exhibit has a fun Polaroid wall which anyone can become part of. I left one behind, see if you find me 😉

Paul Winstanley’s Paintings are soft and subtle, and very beautiful. Except for one that had reds and darker colors. Very different from his very large curtain and green paintings.

And not but not least, Bruce Porter’s paintings are cut-outs addressing mythological themes. There is pencil lines around the shapes and messy color fills. He’s work is interesting, but not my favorite. His exhibit opens tonite 5-22-08.

The Threat of Chance

Ad Hoc in Brooklyn has a pretty cool show until June 1st featuring 4 artists. The collaboration transforms the gallery into what seems like a shanty town. There are 4-5 small shacks you can explore, with art, tags, posters, signs and anything you can think of spread all throughtout. I pretty much had to go through it about 3 times and kept finding hidden photos or hand written notes.

I particularly enjoyed Billy Mode’s work the most. I was attracted to his use of color and his (mainly) square shape layered paintings. I could relate to his use of newspaper and color washes, similar to my technique for my door series last year. So If you have a chance, stop by Ad Hoc and explore…

Artist Michael Sagato

I went to Milk Gallery to see Michael Sagato’s work not knowing what to expect. I know Sagato is around my age and is quickly becoming a very successful artist so I was curious to see what was considered impressive enough to achieve such success. In this series, “The Play of Shine and Shade”, Sagato paints the human figure, mainly female, with a renaissance-style technique. His nudes are beautiful and realistic and he’s drapery reminds me of the old masters. Few of his pieces also reminded me of Odd Nerdrum and one in particular, “Reincarnation”, of Salvador Dali.

There is no doubt Sagato is a talented painter. His brushwork is sophisticated, his colors are rich, dark and dramatic, And his subject matter is thought provoking. I had the pleasure to meet Michael and chatted a bit about his work and his process. Milk Gallery has extended his show until Wednesday April 30th. I hope you have the chance to view his paintings, I highly recommend it.

Robert Rauschenberg

I was walking around 5th ave. and 68th and ran into a gallery which was showing Robert Rauschenberg’s work. I will write soon about the show. But for now you can view most of it on my flickr page. I really enjoyed this find.

I had a chance to go to the ‘banksy nyc’ exhibit at the Vanina Holasek Gallery in new york city. I had no idea he had nothing to do with the show.. but once I walked in, I noticed it was ‘set-up’ kinda cheesy…90% of the work were prints and maybe one or two street pieces (a locker door and sign). There were fake rats all over the place, splattered paint on the walls and caution-tape all over. The pieces were hung crooked and some had ripped bubble wrap around them….the gallery was selling posters, t-shirts and christmas cards (25$)!.
I much rather see banksy, or any graffiti artists, on the street. I know its much harder in the U.S., but I did have the opportunity to see some of his rats in LA a few years back. Having a show where the artist has nothing to do with it, kinda threw me off, specially when they tried so hard to make it look legit. it was weird. I did enjoy seeing things with my own eyes, as I would with anything, but would have rather been at his LA gallery show or stumbled upon it on a walk.
