‘no photography allowed’

So here’s a question… how come at some exhibits there is ‘no’ photography allowed? most museums I have ever attended (domestic and international), photography is allowed, just no flash. But how come some specific exhibits can not be photographed? Is it security? certain insured work that can’t be documented?

For example, Just went to the DALI exhibit at the MoMA 2 weeks ago, and I wanted to document his details for you to see, but no. no cameras allowed… I can understand no flash. but nothing at all? how is an artist suppose to document a piece for inspiration. sure, buy books, but if you are struggling? Take books out from the library? sure, then why are other exhibits allowed to be documented and others not. The only reason why I ask, is ’cause I haven’t seen much consistency with this rule… can anyone enlighten me?

ps: Salvador Dali exhibit currently at the MoMA in NYC is a great collection of his paintings, drawings and film. don’t miss it.

Architecture In Dubai

I haven’t written about architecture, but after this article I felt compelled to.

Everyone has heard and seen how Dubai is growing as an architect’s dream city. The land, the space, the freedom… or so it seems to me anyway. This article talks about a new waterfront city plan for the western side of Dubai. I feel like these landscapes and buildings are beautifully done and are an artistic representation of modern humanity.

This city, once finished, will look like the futuristic cities from the sci-fi world. I ‘d love to visit one day.

Venezuelan Art

I just returned from a trip back home to Maracaibo where all my extended family lives. I had the chance to run around with my godmother, artist Maria Cristina Romero, and view a few exhibits around the city. Below are a few examples.

I got to see artists such as Freddy Paz, Elvis Rosendo, Martin Rincon and Irma Parra. On my flickr I documented as much as I could.

Luke Pidgeon

HELLO!!! God, it’s been a while. I know. L.A. sucks you IN. But I’ve been having a wonderful time. (except for the Heat wave…..) This past weekend my good friend Drew opened up his downtown LA loft to showcase Luke Pidgeon’s Photography. It was a wonderful night with good friends and old memories.

A day at the MET

Spent the day yesterday walking the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 81st and 5th Ave. Its been over 10 years since my last visit (god I feel old), and I forgot how HUGE that museum is. I tried to go through the whole thing, but it must be about a weeks worth of walking….So pretty much just walked around and stumbled into places and eras that seemed interesting.

Loved the Victorian rooms:
MET

Saw plenty of sculptures and paintings. Saw my favorite painters and also took detail pictures of their brushwork. Painters such as Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne really get me in the mood to paint. I love their colors, the richness of the paint, the brushwork and subject matters. I adore the tropical still-lifes and landscapes. They remind me of Venezuela and my godmother, who’s first oil paint lesson for me was a mango still-life on her backporch over-looking the Maracaibo Lake.
MET - Van Gogh

Also swung by the SUPERHEROES exhibit, which was surprisingly small and overly hyped for what it is..as well as the Jeff Koons sculptures on the Rooftop garden. the view was great…the sculptures… meh. I did get a kick of the reflections.

I love the MET. one of my favorites. So much history and so much art. I need a free week to walk it all.

An afternoon in Chelsea

Took a stroll to check out Walton Ford’s exhibit at Paul Kasmin Gallery and ended up viewing 3 other artists in the area. Yoko Ono, Paul Winstanley and Bruce Porter.

Walton Ford’s watercolor works are beautiful and impressive.
Walton Ford

Yoko Ono’s exhibit has a fun Polaroid wall which anyone can become part of. I left one behind, see if you find me 😉
y.o. touch me

Paul Winstanley’s Paintings are soft and subtle, and very beautiful. Except for one that had reds and darker colors. Very different from his very large curtain and green paintings.
Paul Winstanley
And not but not least, Bruce Porter’s paintings are cut-outs addressing mythological themes. There is pencil lines around the shapes and messy color fills. He’s work is interesting, but not my favorite. His exhibit opens tonite 5-22-08.

Giant Waterfalls in NYC?! (update)

2008_01_17t034331_450x321_us_newyork_waterfalls.jpg

An artist’s rendering of the New York City Waterfalls project, proposed by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. Four giant waterfalls will be erected in New York for three months this summer in a public art project city officials hope will create $55 million in extra tourism revenue for the Big Apple. The waterfalls, including one that will fall from the famed Brooklyn Bridge, are the brainchild of Eliasson. They will cost $15 million, to be funded by private donations to New York’s Public Art Fund.
